nWhat a gem to run across! During the 7th episode ("Doo Wah") of the seventh season of Facts of Life, Debarge makes a guest appearance on the show and picks up some background vocals from the FOL gals. Check out a clip of the episode below and also check out the 12" club mix of "You Wear it Well" as well. So freaking cool to see this clip and a great example of classic 80s programing combining great entertainment and music.
While on the topic of 12" mixes, it's always awesome and appreciated when current artists revamp this format. The latest coming from Johan Agebjorn on the forthcoming Samantha Fox Single (Releases April 9th) "Hot Boy".
Dani, out of Seoul, South Korea has long been dishing 80s style remixes of other Korean acts and although I have no idea what the lyrics mean, it is just a damn beautiful thing! Dani's latest is below, prepare to sway.
The Retro Synth scene is heating up right now lots of new artists catching the retro wave fever. Let's just say things are near 'Perfect'. With a nod to the '85 flick staring Travolta and Jaime Lee Curtis,"Gone" by Mike Spawn is perfect to get things warmed up, kick it out!
Future 80s records consistently gets behind great up and coming artists for example Papillon Rising, Midnight Mantics and the latest addition, from Finland, Sodiac. Sodiac's latest tune Yesterday is sun soaked with beautiful melodies and vocals transporting to glowing memories of the past.
Bit of a throwback here before we cool it down. I missed this one when it first came out in 2012, but it's a nice audio visual mix of Soviet era break dancing and a nice groove by DJ Ten.
What can I say abut the next one, brand spanking new by don a.a.ron, he's quickly becoming one of those artists I hit the like on before I press play on Soundcloud. "Over U" is a late night hazy dream that may or may not have happened. Press play close your eyes.
Ending with a full on cool down, Faint Waves presents the 4 track EP, Rain Rhythms Vol 1. The Title says it all and it's the perfect ending to a hell of a week of releases.
April 5th, 2018
First entry on the blog so here we go. If you haven't seen The Running man (1988) starring Schwarzenegger co-starring Maria Conchita Alonso (Colors) it's a must see for 80s lovers. The soundtrack is great via Harold Faltermeyer, however per usual with 80s and early 90s movies there is always at least one great song in the movie I can't find on the soundtrack. I'll keep digging! In addition interspersed throughout "The Running Man" are several fake TV advertising/spots often found throughout many 80s movies (Robocop, Scrooged). These include Jesse 'The Body' Ventura starring as a workout instructor known as 'Captain Freedom' to what I would say looks like the coolest reality TV show never made, "Climbing for Dollars". check it out below.
Another 80s movie I got around to watching this week was "Savage Streets". Loved it so much decided to add the vinyl to my collection. If you haven't seen Savage streets, let me tell you there is no better movie title for this film. It's not for the faint and at times the only way to get through it is to know in your heart of hearts that vengeance must await the bad dudes at some point later in the movie. 'John Farnham', 'Michael Bradley' and '3 speed' make up the majority of the soundtrack and for me this is a treasured collectors item.
Back to modern times, hehe, the 80s revival is still in full swing these days and there are some great tunes/artists emerging. Of course I can't wait for new stuff later this year from Sebastian Gampl, Neon Talk, Ollie Wride, The Midnight, FM-84, TV Players, Ultraboss and Northlock..? I'm not putting this guy up there with the big names yet but im excited to hear some the stuff he's working on. hailing from Scottland Northlock recently did a collab with the Retroglyphs and has a new EP in the works that is sounding lovely!
Another artist ive recently been put on to is a.a.ron. A nod to Key and Peele? nevertheless great tuneage from this dude that has a vaporware edge and top notch production. Have a listen to his latest below. Shout out to Italian musician ABOBO for putting me on to this one.
Last on the list is my pick for the best remix on the 'California Remixes' album recently put out by UK artist Michael Oakley. The album features remixes by Betamaxx, Robots with Rayguns, Brother Tiger and several others but Ultraboss hands down brings the heat for his rendition of "Devotion". It's got some clean heavy bass, complexity and just damn groovey. Check that one and the rest of the album below
